Faro is an approximately 2 & 3/4hour flight from the UK. There are a number of cheap companies who fly into the airport.
We have travelled with Easyjet and if you want a cheap no frill flight they are very good.
There are a vast number of car hire companies offering car hire in Portugal. We have shortlisted below the larger companies that have offices at Faro Airport. It is always better to book car hire in advance before your holiday. There can be no guarantee that the car you want will be available at short notice, especially during busy holiday periods.
Beware always the extra charges that are added on when you arrive to collect the car.
Most companies will charge extra to insure any excess on the insurance, plus some companies charge extra for additional drivers and items like child seats.
Normally you will be required to return the car with a full tank - beware options wheere you can return the car empty as the hire companies penalise you heavily if they have to refuel the car. There is a large petrol station near the roundabout as you go back towards the airport. There are also a couple of petrol stations on the main road back from the apartment on the way to the airport. With a relatively small car, you can fill the tank at one of these petrol stations and it will still register as full when you return the car at the airport.
We have only been caught once, by one of the major hire companies who told us to return the hire car empty, then proceeded to charge us a penalty when this was done - the small print normally says return full - SO BE AWARE! We have not included this hire company above.
We have used both Hertz and Sixt in the past and have had no major problems.
